This may be due to the rise of technology, specifically the dependence of the internet on peopleââ¬â¢s everyday lives. The idea of Art seems to get lost in todayââ¬â¢s world and newer generations have distanced themselves from art. We will write a custom essay sample on Art and How It Effects the Geographical or any similar topic only for you Order Now There once was such a heavily reliance and dependence on art in peopleââ¬â¢s everyday lives but with time this has slowly started to fade. In the Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s Online Dictionary there are sixty eight definitions for ââ¬ËArtââ¬â¢. The definition that many people associate with or people with some knowledge about art tend to use from the Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s Dictionary is that it is something produced as an artistic effort or for decorative purposes. Another definition for art from the same dictionary is the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects. Many people interpret art in many different ways. This is very evident in todayââ¬â¢s society with regards to people and relating what they are practicing, believing or doing to a form of art. This may be controversial in some cases which, over time have led to there being many conflicts and wars over such issues relating back to art. Famous pieces of art have been created over time, by famous artists who have shaped the world of art of today. Lobbyist groups, culture groups and other parties have formed over time and have used different forms of art to come together to promote awareness to their group or cause. Political involvement in the Artââ¬â¢s sector is something that over time has become an issue for some people who do not agree with how money is being allocated for the arts. In some cases how the government handles situations in relation to the Arts and funding is questioned sometimes because some people feel like they are not being cared for or assisted. As discussed in the article Lobbying for Arts and Culture by Jason Hall, during the 1970s, arts and culture lobbying became a bigger issue at the federal level. It was during this time that the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities (NEA and NEH) and The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) were created. This creation allowed for lobbying to become intensely focused at a federal level. Along with these creations came annual appropriations, which meant that money was now being set aside for funding of the Arts. This was something that at first many people were not aware of was happening, but once people realized the issue became a bigger one for everyone involved. At one point funding was as high as 175 million a year for the Arts in the United States, specifically Washington D. C. The culture wars of the 1980ââ¬â¢s and 1990 have brought tension between cultures for reasons relating in back to art. With the creation of these boards, services and relations the wars were able to fade in the late 1990ââ¬â¢s as culture and art became more intertwined with peopleââ¬â¢s everyday lives. Around this time is when the electronic boom happened and advancements in technology exploded around the world. With new creations and inventions increasing the way people interact with each other people were now able to collect information in ways they have never been able to do before. This was something that benefitted most parties involved but also left a window for people to be exposed. With this new technology at many institutions and peopleââ¬â¢s disposal more political issues were able to be handled in a quicker manor. What many people fail to realize with Art is since many people see it as such a broad topic people can relate to art in many different ways through beliefs, views, practises and talents. This idea has raised questions for future generations because the decline in people participating in some form of art is raising thanks in part to a variety of reasons. The main argument deals with technology and how people today are more interested in electronics as opposed to the Arts. There are still many people today who rely and believe heavily in the Arts. The sad reality is that number is not what it once was bringing up many questions people do not have answers for. An example would be since funding today is so great for the Arts in many cases across Canada and the United States and other parts of the world will the investments now be used and appreciated in the future. The market for art depends on the people involved wither it is paintings, religions, music or any other form of art. Depending on the audience some forms of art are enjoyed by more people with more funding going in the direction of the places or practises that are less popular to the general public but still attract guests and people associated with that form of art. This is what makes art so interesting the fact that the market depends on the people one speaks to and what he or she believes or has strong feelings for. With being so broad more people can relate in one way or another, but it is something that is not happening due to peopleââ¬â¢s interests elsewhere. This has led to organizations today being created that are either legitimate or scams which is why in some cases people have a hard time trusting certain situations. The idea of tax advantages for certain organizations was mentioned in Halls article leading to these organizations being created over night in some cases to get in on these tax advantages. With these tax advantages that were starting to be given out to certain charity groups, local museums and theatres to name a few advocacy and lobbyist groups began to appear in larger numbers. These groups are created to try and preserve Art and the many great things that it has to offer in such a variety of different ways. Through music, dance or visual displays art allows people to express themselves in ways that they would normally not be able to do. A lot of credit for art being able to survive in todayââ¬â¢s world goes to the generous donors and government tax grants and other incentives received due to a lack of interest in some cases. The operating costs for being involved with Art can get pretty high so having generous donations for people, businesses or governments allows these places to continue to operate. The impact of new technologies has changed how the word of art is interpreted for many people. This is done in many ways, with relation to artists and artwork people can now see their work online in most cases and do not need to fly across the world to see a famous painting. Listening to famous orchestras or musicals can now be done online as well taking away from experiences people can only get when they see the art performance first hand. Although in these cases new technologies seem to have hindered certain ideas that art tries to promote it has given people a chance to hear or see things they would not normally see because they are located in other parts of the world. With these new technologies at peopleââ¬â¢s disposal it gives more people a chance to explore and find out different forms of art. This is because people can take art for what they think it is, explore it with the technologies available and find other people who feel the same way. Regardless of how people feel politics in the end have a big say in how things are run and operated within certain jurisdictions with regards to the Arts. A big issue for politicians and the topic of art is now the security of the general public due to attacks stemming from certain beliefs or practices. Again another problem with politics is actually receiving the funding from the House or the Senate. In most cases a congressmen or senators have to be connected in some way or another to a certain museum or cause to receive a generous donation. Much has changed from the early times that date back to the Greeks with regards to how people saw and interpreted art. The roles it had on everyday life and culture have changed dramatically depending on where one decides to locate. Over time there have been many difficult days, months and years involving art and culture wars with many lives being taken in the end. The federal levels involvement in art is what is keeping it alive, mainly due to money investments and donations from the government, charities or private groups. A great example that was given in Halls article was how Museums generally get about 95ââ¬â97 percent of their public sector funding from local and state government. Art is still important to many peopleââ¬â¢s livelihood because they depend on art to express how they feel or provide a living. The most come perception people get when they just hear the word art is associate it with paintings, drawings or something else one would see in a museum. While many people would agree with this the media in todayââ¬â¢s world along with the technology at peopleââ¬â¢s fingertips has managed to almost hide art and make it not as powerful and meaningful as it once was on everyday life around the world. One can see that over time peopleââ¬â¢s views and desires have begun to steer away from being so involved with art directly. This is something that will ultimately take away from the meaning of great things that have had to deal with art in the past because people will not be informed or aware due to the lack of coverage and dependency on art. I will evaluate each source (and your description of it) individually as to its relevance to the decision to be made (and your formulat ion of the decision to be made). That is, it will be evaluated as to what information it provides that will enable an informed decision to be made. I will evaluate the collective body of sources to the extent that they, as a group, are likely to provide the necessary information to make an informed decision. Part II Research DesignThis part of the assignment will consist of a description of primary, applied/empirical, research (e.g. customer or potential customer surveys) to address the specific information requirements of the situation. This is a description of applied research to be conducted to provide knowledge that will assist in the decision making for your assigned problem. You will describe: 1) the specific information to be collected (i.e., the variable(s) to be measured), 2) the relevance of the information to the decision process, and 3) the methodology by which the information will be collected (the research design). The methodology is where the researcher identifies the specific steps that will be taken to collect the information needed to answer the research questions. The design of an unbiased research methodology is the focus of the second part of this course. It is imperative that you understand, and can control, the potential sources of bias in a study.Format:I. IntroductionAn explanation of the decision to be made (or problem solved or issue addressed). An explanation as to what information will be generated and how that information would be used to assist in the decision process for the problem assigned. This section should provide a clear description of the concepts to be studied and the variables that will be measured.II. Research PlanA description of the methodology/research plan.III. ConclusionA summary that ties together the sources of information (From both Part I and Part II of this term assignment) to demonstrate a comprehensive covering of the relevant information. Note: the conclusion of the paper cannot, for obvious reasons, pres ent the results of your proposed research. But it should present a summary of how the information to be gained will inform the decision to be made. Answers: Part I: Research paper Annotated Bibliography Introduction This section of the study emphasized on assessment on past research work related to music tempo and its impact on customers food consumption. While there were several studies have been performed by research scholars, each of the study has certain limitations. At the same time, considering the specific case scenario, it is also necessary to reviewed past works to make any recommendation. Thus, this study was performed. Here, eight scholar articles have been taken into account and demonstrated the relevance of the material to the decision to be made. In other words, it can be said that this study has shown a pathway through which further study can be executed with special reference to given case scenario. Source List As mentioned above, this section of the study has analyzed a list of previous works related to the study area to help the researcher in making an informed decision. With the help of this assessment of previous works, the researcher tried to identified the existing gaps so that the current research can demonstrate the strategy that restaurant chains can adopt related to use of music. Source 1: Stroebele, N., de Castro, J. M. (2006). Listening to music while eating is related to increases in people's food intake and meal duration. Appetite, 47(3), 285-289. While considering the study executed by Stroebele and Castro (2006), it can be said that they have executed this study to understand whether listening music while eating will increase the food consumption as well as duration of the meal. According to this study finding, it has become clear that the music availability will significantly influence the food consumption as well as food intake. However, the tempo of the music did not impact that much. Again, the study method has revealed that they have considered college student as the sample of this study. So, from this point of view, it can be argued that the study was concluded based on a specific target group of people. Since, the restaurant customers not restricted in college students, whether the findings will remain same for all group of customers, cannot be said. So, further study is required considering larger sample with all groups of people. Source 2: Harrington, R.J., Ottenbacher, M.C., Staggs, A. and Powell, F.A., 2012. Generation Y Consumers Key Restaurant Attributes Affecting Positive and Negative Experiences. Journal of Hospitality Tourism Research, 36(4), pp.431-449. Again, the study executed by Harrington (2012) if taken into account, then also it can be noted that the study mainly tried to exemplify whether music in restaurants changed guest behavior in terms of food consumption or not. This study also emphasized specific tempo of the music. However, unlike the above mentioned study, this study considered two different sub studies. The first one has been conducted in a casual restaurant in Germany, while the second one performed in a simulated restaurant setting integrated with hospitality curriculum in the USA. This study has revealed that there were two different results during lunch and dinning period. Given that the menu remains same; such difference has been pointed out. While the music remains constant, the food spending during dinner was positively influenced by the age. However, during lunch time there was no such influence. Unlike the above study, though this particular study has considered different age group of people, the study did not emphasize on quality perception, satisfaction, even consumption pattern. So, further study might put light on such areas. Source 3: Jacob, C., Guguen, N., Boulbry, G. (2010). Effects of songs with prosocial lyrics on tipping behavior in a restaurant. International Journal of Hospitality Management, 29(4), 761-763. While considering the study executed by Jacob, Gueguen and Boulbry (2010), it can be said that the study was performed to test the effect of songs with prosocial lyrics on tipping behavior of the customers. For this purpose a sample of 786 customers was considered fewer than 3 conditions. The experiment was conducted for 6 weeks twice a day, 3 kind of background music (prosocial lyrics, neutral lyrics and baseline conditions) were played. According to the study findings, it can be argued that playing songs with prosocial lyrics caused greater helping behavior of customers. At the same time, the study also revealed that the average rate of customers tipping the waiters is more when songs with prosocial lyrics are played compared to when songs with neutral lyrics are played. This experiment was conducted under natural setting where customers were exposed to many other events. Later studies have found that listening to songs with prosicial lyrics not only increase helping tendency of cu stomers but also gives birth to a prosocial feeling in them. But these studies were performed under laboratory conditions where customers were solely under the influence of the songs not under any other events unlike this study. So, from this point of view, it has become clear that further study needs to be conducted with considering the nature setting. Source 4: Demoulin, N. T. (2011). Music congruency in a service setting: The mediating role of emotional and cognitive responses. Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, 18(1), 10-18. While considering the research done by Demoulin (2011), it can be explained that the aim of this study was to understand the music congruency in a service setting. According to the findings made by the author, the shopping behavior is affected by store atmosphere. In order to perform this study, the author has integrated a model, which assumed that customers emotions influence their shopping behavior. According to their Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) Model, the atmosphere is the stimulus (S) that provokes consumers evaluations (O) and causes behavioral responses (R). A focus group was used made up of six regular customers of the restaurant and the non-congruent music was played by a well known French radio station. The author has implemented seven-point semantic differential scale to measure emotional responses to the environment. The data was analyzed using Smart PLS version 2.0.M3 in two stages- Measurement and Structural Model. The conclusion drawn was that a congruency between music and the service atmosphere improves customer perceptions of the service environment and service quality in a catering setting. The managerial implication from this study is the crucial importance of congruency between music and service scape atmosphere. Few limitations of the study were the experiment was conducted in a single fast food restaurant; music is a complex stimulus that may differ in several aspects, in the study the type of music and volume was considered but not the tempo, familiarity and liking. Thus it can be concluded that customers positive evaluation of environment quality and service quality increases their intention to return to the restaurant. Source 5: Eroglu, S. A., Machleit, K. A., Chebat, J. C. (2005). The interaction of retail density and music tempo: Effects on shopper responses. Psychology Marketing, 22(7), 577-589. From the study conducted by Eroglu, Machleit, Chebat (2005), it can be said that they have analyzed the context to examine the impact of two retail atmospheric cues: density and music on shoppers responses. For this study a sample of 347 respondents were considered belonging to the age group of 23-54. The data was collected in two waves via intercept method. The density was determined by considering the time of the day when the interview took place and was categorized into high and low density. The music was calibrated by the experts of Muzak. Hedonic and utilitarian evaluations are measured by Likert format. The utilitarian evaluations were measured by I accomplished what I wanted to on this shopping trip, I couldnt buy what I really needed, while shopping I just found the item I was looking for. This study reveals two important findings firstly it was conducted in actual mall setting therefore the external validity of the findings surpasses all literature observed till date. Second ly, the study also reveals that it takes work on atmospheric effect on retail environment in a new direction. This study has many limitations like no measure of perceived crowding was taken into study. Another limitation is as although the study was conducted in actual setting there still exist a number of contaminators from sources unavoidable. Therefore from the above findings, it is advisable to conduct more studies on the given topic while taking a note on the limitations. Source 6: Ryu, K., Han, H. (2011). New or repeat customers: How does physical environment influence their restaurant experience?. International Journal of Hospitality Management, 30(3), 599-611. While considering the research conducted by Kisang Ryu and Heesup hun (2011), it was researched that essentiality of creation and maintenance a distinctive atmosphere to growth and enhanced the attention towards hospitality managers and experts. It is also considering several essential factors to attract a satisfied the targeted customers to monitor their financial performance through their income and market issued share in the hospitality industry. The main objectives behind the study were (1) to enhance the effects of customers perception at the time of their dining experiences as per the environment in the restaurant premises, (2) observation of different reactions and influences on the disconfirmation on the customer satisfaction level, (3) for investigating the moderate effect as per the previous experiences which is linking with the physical environment. The overall methodology used in the research is questionnaire methodologies to develop on the basis of extant literature to e xamine the accurate relationship between quality of the environment and satisfaction level of customer through create research plan with more than four hundred fifty customers at a 3 upscale restaurants. The actual study behind the two step approaches to evaluate validity to test different hypothesis test. The result was, about 54.0% of the participants were male (n = 161), and 46.0% were female (n = 137). Their mean age was 37.82 years old. The limitation of the study was since the data was collected from 3 upscale restaurants in Korea the result could not be generalized. Thus, it can be concluded that the present study revealed that the proposed model could be properly assumed actual perception of customers by considering their loyalty and implying customers satisfaction in the hospitality industries is highly exclusive. Source 7: Fang, Z. (2015). The Study on the Effect of Background Music on Customer Waiting Time in Restaurant. Open Cybernetics Systemics Journal, 9, 2163-2167. While the above mentioned studies have emphasized on music tempo and its influence on food consumption or meal duration, the study performed by Fang (2015), mainly considered the effect of such music tempo on customer waiting time. In order to perform this study, the author had employed experimental design, where the author randomly picked large restaurant and observed its customers average waiting time. According to the study findings, it can be said that the music has significantly influence the average waiting time of customers. As concluded by the author, it was noted that the slow tempo normally influence customers to wait more time. Whereas, in case of high tempo music shorten the average waiting period. However, the study itself revealed that the study was performed based on school restaurants. Hence, how the customer will responds outside the school restaurant cannot be predicted from this study. At the same time, it is also noted that the study mainly considered randomized e xperimental design. So, there was certain biasness in data employed. Moreover, the study did not take into account the gender aspect. So, in future such aspects need to be taken into account. Source 8: Mandila, M., Gerogiannis, V. (2012). The effects of music on customer behavior and satisfaction in the region of Larissathe cases of two coffe bars. In International conference on contemporary marketing issues (ICCMI). Finally, the study performed by Madila and Gerogiannis (2012) considered the overall satisfaction level related to music. In this study, they have considered four music types. They have also considered a week observation where no music had been played. According to their findings, it can be argued that each of the music type has different influence. Though the study has revealed that the overall satisfaction did not largely influence by the type of music, gender specifications as well as volume of the music are necessary aspects. Conclusion From the above study, it has become clear that there was overall positive influence of music on customers behavior in restaurants. Each of the study has shown a specific aspect, while some important aspects have been ignored. So, it can be said that whether to continue with the decision in the given context, there is requiring consideration of tempo of music, waiting time, food intake, gender specifications as the major variables. In other words, it can be concluded that the research work needs to be performed to understand whether the tempo of music influence the customer behavior in restaurant. Here, the customer behavior can be measured through meal duration, food intake, and waiting time. At the same time another aspect needs to be verified that the influence of tempo of the music differs between male and female customers. Therefore, below two hypotheses will be considered: Hypothesis 1: Tempo of music has no significant influence on customer behavior in restaurant environment; Hypothesis 2: The influence of tempo of the music does not differ in between male and female customers Part II: Research Design Introduction This section of the study has exemplified the research plan that will be employed to execute this research work. Since, Restaurant in West Warwick RI wants to whether they can continue the existing style of music or any faster tempo needs to be adopted that will impact the profit margin, the spending details also considered here along with the above mentioned variables. Research Plan Nature of the data As discussed in the above section, most of the studies related to this area of work were mainly considered the spending time. At the same time, they have also considered food intake, type of foods etc, while performing these research work. However, the limitations of these studies has shown that tempo of background music, waiting time, food intake, gender specifications are major aspects that needs to be taken into consideration (Turabian Williams, 2013). On the other hand, considering the hypotheses set in the above section, it has become clear that the researcher will have to collect primary data to reach into a meaningful conclusion. From this point of view, it can be said that the researcher will either have to observe or ask questions to the customer to obtain information for this research work. While considering the first hypothesis, it can be said that the researcher will intended to assess the behavior changes in terms of waiting time, spending time, food consumption, etc due to the background music (Wang, 2010). So for this hypothesis, the major information will be associated to customers behavioral pattern. On the other hand, if the second hypothesis is taken into account here, then it can be said that the study will divide the entire sample into two groups based on gender specification (Wang Gelfand, 2013). Therefore the same information will be used for second hypothesis. Only the analysis tool will be different to find meaningful conclusion. Population and Sampling The customer of The 1149 Restaurant is the population for this study. Here, the researcher will consider a specific sample that will represent the entire population. The sample for this study will be collected from the population on the basis of two specific conditions. The selection of sample will consider customers who visit the restaurant from 4 pm to 7 pm. According to the employees of this restaurant, this is one of busiest time of The 1149 Restaurant in West Warwick RI. This is the reason; the researcher will consider this time frame. This will enable the researcher to diversify the sample (Yamaguchi, 2013). In this context, it is also noted that the slow working environment of the restaurant is during their operational period 26th to 30th in a month, whereas it is highly efficiently working at the first week of month from 2nd to 6th of a particular month (Su Wang, 2010). The researcher expect that considering samples from each period will provide rational to conclude whether volume of the music and tempo will directly impact on the customers behavior or not. The overall research will consider 250 visitors of the restaurant every week for two week period. The primary objective behind this research study is to assess the average time spent by the customers at the venue by following two different conditions. The management of the organization is not able to collect feedback of the entire customers at a same time (Sieber Tolich, 2013). So the researcher will have to collect data from the samples and thus needs to select a specific sampling method. In specific, random sampling technique will be utilized to collect feedback from the selected customer at the time of their billing processed activities. Research instrument There are different types of research methods available that are followed by the researchers at the time of research study. Taken for example questionnaire methods, observation methods, survey, interviews and other methods are employed to collect information from the target segment of people (Salaberry Comajoan, 2013). The method that will be used here for The 1149 Restaurant, is direct collection of feedback from the customers who have been spending time for longer period of time. At the same time, the researcher will also target to collect feedback from those customers who are leaving early from the restaurant. This will help the researcher to understand the time spading aspects. It is also the fact that the restaurant management also keeps records of spending duration at the venue (Platt Harper, 2013). So, these data will also be adopted here. There are also several difficulties faced by the restaurant management at the time of one group is divided in several parts due to differ ent sections and improper response of the customers. Most of time customers do not want to provide feedback or if they do, that is also not appropriate (Yang Furnham, 2015). Hence, the researcher aims to use closed ended questionnaire, where the respondents only needs to select the best fitted option among the available ones. There are several issues behind selection of survey methods is to understand the right time for feedback and selection of the customer as per their spending time and behavior (Pryor, 2012). The survey method is also at the time of winter weather when at the departure time customers putting on their winter jackets. The restaurant attendant can easily go to table to and ask for the valuable feedback of the customers. As per these methodologies, the overall research study can be completed by the restaurant authorities to evaluate their research processes. The survey method would be done by selection of questionnaire techniques for collection of research data. Research techniques As mentioned above, the research techniques that will be used by the researcher is closed ended questionnaire. However, the researcher will consider demographics parameters prior to collect essential information (Morrison, 2012). Four different types of music will be applied (pop jazz classical and country) while collect data from the sample. These all selected songs will be automatically shuffle and randomly selected by the managerial staff of the venue to understand the fluctuation of mood of the customers as per the tempo of the music and songs. The questionnaire technique is one of most preferable way to collect most genuine response from the restaurant visitors within research period of time. The songs are used by the restaurant authorities is well fully mixed and layout by the music specialist company to pleased the mood of the visiting customers at that point of time. The selection of the music is also several range and beats as per the modern trends and majority of the customers (Lott Antony, 2012). The management staffs of the organization can easily stored all the details about the songs and music at the time of collecting feedback from the customers for better observation. As per the Kuada (2013) musical features and tempo always creating compound affect on the mood of the visitors. And the questionnaire method is one of most relevant way to collect direct face to face review and reaction of the visitors. The playlists used by the restaurant management with two specific conditions like higher volume and lower volume of the background music will be direct providing impact on the behavior and spending duration of the venue. In this context, it can be said that there will be no incentives for the participants. Data analysis approach As mentioned in the above section, the study will consider two specific hypotheses. In order to perform the hypothesis tests, the researcher will use multiple regression analysis for first hypothesis (Clark, 2013). On the other hand, to perform the second hypothesis test, the researcher will employ independent sample t test. While considering the independent sample t test, male and female customer group will be two different groups. Shortcomings of research design In the overall research study, the researcher has been faced higher amount of risk and difficulties while collection of database and feedback of the customer due to their ignorance and some other reasons. There are several factors which will support the restaurant management to minimize the risk to reduce survey errors and its effect on the several variables used by the organization (Chandra Sharma, 2013). There are few precautions which are required to manage by the organization to reduce the survey errors of the organization. The timing of the feedback should be proper and selection of customers whom they are selected for the provide feedback will be directly affected by some external factors like day of visits, holidays, occasion and some other professional or personal meetings of the visitors (Biddle Emmett, 2013). The customers should be genuine and present at least for a while at the time of operation and stay till the end of the scenarios need to be considered by the organization and generated accurate results to obtained better evaluation outcomes. The numbers of observations were required for collection of database by using survey method which is directly providing impact on the research survey (Annafari, 2013). These activities will be observing the researchers as per the given conditions and it should be hypothetical in nature. The survey period of the organization should be based on the minimizing the effects of timing and fluctuation of mood of the customers as per the days and occasions celebrated by the customers. The research design processes need to be error free but sometimes it is possible to the customers not to provide proper idea about a particular scenario which is directly impact on the research process of the organization (Alvesson Sandberg, 2013). Conclusion Thus to conclude, it can be said that this study has revealed the process of executing a research work in a clearer way. As discussed in the first part of this study, there is requiring assessment of existing research work prior to consider the research questions and hypotheses of the study. At the same time, the study has also demonstrated the detail framework for executing the research work that will enable whether to follow the existing style of music or to use higher tempo for better profitability margin. Coronado Learning and Cognition All psychology students, at some point during their studies, learn about the topic of mental development in children. However, students sometimes fail to learn how those with disabilities differ when it comes to mental development. The typical childââ¬â¢s development differ dramatically when compared to children with a development disability. One of a large number of developments disabilities is Down syndrome, where an individual learns and functions on a different level than others. Children with this developmental disability primarily differ in their cognitive development, socialization, education and attachment. Pamela May, author of Child Development in Practice: Responsive Teaching and Learning from Birth to Five defines cognitive development as ââ¬Å"The mental process of knowing, including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning and judgmentâ⬠(2011, 16). Jean Piaget, a recognized psychologist, expresses that development split among four phases; sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational. As stated by Cicchetti and Beeghly (1990), adolescents with and those without disabilities experience the same stages. Nevertheless, adolescents with developmental disabilities are believed to proceed through these various phases gradually compared to other adolescents with no developmental disabilities (Hill McCune-Nicolich 1981). Within a study concluded by Hill and McCune-Nicolichââ¬â¢s, children with Down syndrome developed at a much slower rate within the preoperational phase when compared to children without Down syndrome. The group comprised of adolescents with Down syndrome generating outcomes consisting of a 50% failure in development throughout the preoperational stage measure against the group of children without the disability. This study parallels Cicchetti and Beeghly theory, observing slight to no differentiation throughout the sensorimotor stage however observed a delayed developmental pace regarding children with Down syndrome throughout the preoperational stage. What precisely triggers this obstruction in adolescents with Down syndrome? These adolescents are affected by a variation in their genotype. These persons possess an additional chromosome called trisomy-21, which influences their development. Down syndrome influences adolescents in every phase of development. Sanz, Menà ©ndez Rosique state, ââ¬Å"This chromosomal disorder affects the development of physical structures, motor functioning, cognitive abilities and communicative skills in varying degreesâ⬠(2011, 488). Language functioning seemed to be difficult during the preoperational phase for adolescentââ¬â¢s affected by Down syndrome. Cicchetti and Beeghly describe that despite the fact that this struggle is associated with the disorder, Down syndrome adolescents tend to be placed in inadequate linguistic surroundings. Parents of affected adolescents stereotypically lower their expectancies of language abilities upon discovering their adolescentââ¬â¢s disorder. Cicchetti and Beeghly refer to a 1985 study by Mervis and Cardoso-Martins where mothers confessed that they were fearful their children influenced by Down syndrome would never learn to talk. Nevertheless, Leifer and Lewis conducted a study in 1984 exploring Down syndrome adolescentsââ¬â¢ verbal skills in depth. The researchers recognized various characteristics of language which had not been exclusively considered in earlier studies. Researchers chose to study whether or not adolescents with Down syndrome will continue to struggle with conversational language versus grammatical/relational language. The researchers discovered that adolescents affected by Down syndrome were essentially superior at holding a conversation compared to adolescents without a disability. In regards to the information provide, there is confirmation proposing Down Syndrome adolescents possess superior social language skills compared to adolescents without the disability. Sanz, Menà ©ndez Rosique conducted a study in which, adolescents affected by Down syndrome were subjected to a verbal strengthening group or a physical strengthening group. Each type of constructive reinforcement impacted the adolescents. The adolescents produced more encouraging responses to verbal reinforcement versus the physical reinforcement. Why the adolescents favored verbal reinforcement is not entirely evident, nevertheless a trend was obvious. The adolescents flourished when presented with social praise for their accomplishments. However this is also true for unaffected adolescents as well, it is crucial for adolescent affected by Down syndrome. Their disorder triggers reservation in their actions as to whether what they are doing right or wrong on a steady basis. As a result, these adolescents function at a higher level when they are socialized through affirmative support. Conversely, in a study by Drash, Raver, Murrin Tudor (1989), adolescents affected by Down syndrome did not successfully socialize when presented constructive support alone. They combined visual examination into the constructive support. When measure against affirmative strengthening alone, the addition of visual examination generated more social interaction from the children. It becomes evident that adolescents affected by Down syndrome need much more stimulus than adolescents not affected in regards to socialization. Their cognitive delay limits them from entirely comprehending reinforcement alone. Visual encouragement permits their minds to adapt to a new idea and absorb it. This cultivates the question of whether or not special education classrooms are necessary for children with Down syndrome. Some suppose that normal education surroundings afford sufficient stimulus to adolescents affected with the disorder. On the other hand, in most cases the typical education surroundings are not adequate. There are specialists educating adolescents with cognitive delays such as those with Down syndrome. Special Education is a stand-alone discipline of study and cannot be anticipated from all that enter this particular teaching field. Special Education demands diverse methods and compassions compared to that of normal teachers. If an adolescent affected by Down syndrome were to be placed into the average classroom, the presence of an aid would be necessary. This poses funding issues as well as the adolescentââ¬â¢s parental trust. It is much more feasible to place these adolescents in special educational environments which possess several aids in addition to a se t pace of learning for each individual (Fidler Nadel, 2007). Fidler Nadel furthermore describe a ââ¬Å"cultureâ⬠in special needs classrooms where adolescents affected by Down syndrome can succeed. Countless adolescents requiring special needs flourish when surrounded by others who also differ from adolescents without disabilities. Nevertheless, adolescentââ¬â¢s parents frequently worry about the equal treatment and lack of socialization among unaffected children. This all differs among particular adolescents as well as the school they attend. Countless schools fashion an atmosphere in which adolescents requiring special needs possess the ability to interact with the other students at lunch, recess, homeroom, etc. Contrary to what Fidler Nadel explain, a study by Sobelman-Rosenthal, Biton, Klein (2009) examined children with Down syndrome in regular educational settings and compared to special education settings. Parents were questioned as to the setting they preferred for their child. Parents were divided into three groups: those who favored life-skills, those who favored academic success and those who favored social success. Generally, parents seemed to prefer regular educational setting. The parents perceived substantial developmental advances when their child was placed in a regular school environment. It is evident researchers have achieved contradictory outcomes. This is presumably due to the fact that every case differ from one another. Certain adolescents require additional help compared to others in addition certain special education programs are better than others. The answer is uncertain in regards to which educational settings more beneficial for an adolescent affected by Down syndrome since each setting possess there advantages and drawbacks. The safest thing for a parent to do is research individual surroundings in their school district and formulate an educated assessment from there (Fidler Nadel). The connection an adolescent affected by Down syndrome possesses regarding his or her mother also effects their mental development. ââ¬Å"Communication between mother and infant occurs by many means: it employs facial expressions, gazing, whole body movements, gestures, speech, writing, and even crying ââ¬Å"(Fiamenghi, Vedovato, Meirelles, Shimoda, 2010, 192). Adolescents require the ability to understand this interaction and in adolescents affected by Down syndrome it becomes difficult to understand if they comprehend the communication and itsââ¬â¢ effects. Adolescents affected by Down syndrome occasionally require the development of a connection in diverse ways compared to unaffected children. The manner in which they do this is vital since it may possibly signify particular needs the child must have addressed that may not be exposed through clinical assessment. Nevertheless, since parents do not normally comprehend the syndrome entirely in earlier stages in their childââ¬â¢s life, they tend to be opposed in nearly all they do with their child. Parents regularly tend be afraid they are not caring for their child appropriately as a result become reluctant to do everything they would for an adolescent not affected by Down syndrome (Fiamenghi et al.) A study conducted in 2010 regarding collaborative behaviors in adolescents affected by Down syndrome with their mothers, three groups of behavior were recognized: Interaction, Invitation and Imitation. The outcomes specified that a sizeable amount of these behaviors benefited however quality is what made the significant differences in the adolescentââ¬â¢s emotional attachment. Down syndrome adolescents depend on on these behaviors for the reason that it aids them mentally develop. It is considerably simpler for them to mimic somebody they trust for example their mother or father, in contrast to merely learning these behaviors as they grow. The greater quality the imitation is in addition to interaction obtained throughout their earlier ages, the greater articulated constructive behavior as they grow up. The reasoning behind this is due to their cognitive delay becomes more prevalent with age. They have a scarcity of a particular characteristic of cognition that other adolescents p ossess, consequently these interactions become significant in demonstrating to them how to behave (Fiamenghi et al.) A study conducted in 1999 investigated bonding behaviors in 53 children aged 14-30 months. The children were exposed to a ââ¬Å"Strange Situationâ⬠where an unfamiliar person would come into the room and the parent would leave. Their response to the parent leaving was then observed. They established that although attachment is exceptionally significant with Down syndrome children, it is not necessary to grant considerably more consideration than in children not affected by Down syndrome. The researchers discovered that parents should be mindful of however no additional action can counteract the child from theoretically suffering from attachment issues. Parents should approach attachment the exact same way as if their child was not effected by Down syndrome (Atkinson, Chisholm, Scott, Goldberg, Vaughn, Blackwell, Tam). Atkinson et al. findings vary marginally from Fiamenghi et al. nonetheless they equally possess similarities as well. Both research groups distinguish the significance of attachment in adolescents affected by Down syndrome. It appears Atkinson et al. would approve of Fiamenghi et al. findings that quality is the predicting factor, not quantity. Since each study exhibited the interactional significance between the parent and adolescents affected by Down syndrome, additional research on the topic possess the probability of making momentous advances in both psychology and special education. Although there are numerous means where adolescents affected by Down syndrome and adolescents without any developmental ailments can relate, there are still several variances in their mental development in which we must account for. The main variances are comprised of cognition, socialization, education and attachment. Cognition deals with their development through the stages of learning and comprehension. Socialization is a strength many children with Down syndrome possess. Their ability to dive in to any conversation is remarkable. Education is and most likely will continue to be an issue for all families with children affected by developmental disabilities. Each program differs so greatly that there simply cannot be one assumption made. Finally, the way in which they develop an attachment with their mothers can be critical but not any more so than children not inflicted by a disability. Down syndrome can present many obstacles for the child as well as the family, but there is no r eason they cannot live a life as fulfilling and exciting as the rest of us. The levels of employment in each of the different economy's sectors will be examined as percentages, to show clearly the increase or decline over time. Principally the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary sectors will be described as will the Quaternary and possibly Quinary in the later 20th century, and early 21st century. The Primary sector involves the extraction of raw materials that all other areas of an economic system rely upon; examples include Mining, Fishing and Agriculture. At the end of any Primary activity there is little or no value added to the product; low value, high bulk products. The Secondary Sector involves adding value, and shedding bulk from these products. There are two types of manufacturing; Heavy industry ââ¬â processing raw materials directly from primary products (steel to iron ore), and Light industry ââ¬â assembling products in preparation for the market (car manufacturing). The Tertiary Sector is the provision of goods and services to the consumers. There are no processes involved; the products (goods or information) are simply supplied to the consumers. The Quaternary Sector is a more recent evolution and subset of the tertiary sector. It has aroused from the new market created from technological advances and is widely known to involve Research and Development. The current UK employment structure is as follows; 76% are employed in the Tertiary sector (encompassing the Quaternary and Quinary) which includes the UK's excellent and rapidly growing financial services industry which accounts for, 22% in the Secondary sector, and only 2% are involved in Primary sector activities. In 1945 the structure of employment within the UK was extremely different from today. There was a much higher percentage of the workforce involved in Primary and Secondary activities, where as today the Tertiary industry dominates. Over 40% of the workforce was employed in the Secondary Sector in manufacturing industries, 35% involved in tertiary activities, and 25% employed in the Primary Sector. From the post-war years into the 1950s the Primary Sector experienced an immediate and rapid decline in employment levels, this decrease remained at a high rate until 1975, when it began to plateaux and slowly decline until reaching its current level of 2%. Currently there are 13 coal mines in the UK producing an annual output of only 30 million tonnes compared with the 169 mines in 1984 that produced over 130,000 million tonnes of coal annually. The level of employment in the Secondary Sector has also declined since 1945; however a small increase was experienced first, where the sectors employment percentage reached nearly 50 in 1950. After this it began to decrease, slowly at first, but began to fall more rapidly after around 1975. Manufacturing industries experienced a 30% fall in employment between 1971 and 1994. The Tertiary sector however has undergone an increase in its percentage of UK workforce employment ever since 1945. This increase occurred quite rapidly during the industrialisation period, and continued into the pre-industrial, however has slowed now and levelled off at around 70%. These changes in the UK's employment structure described above can be well represented by the Clark-Fisher model below. The development over time of an industry can clearly be observed, as the relative number of those employed in each sector changes as the country develops. This model is able to demonstrate the changes experienced by the UK so clearly as it was initially based upon the employment structure change overtime in both The USA and the UK. THE CLARK-FISHER MODEL: The reasons for these variations in employment structure over time vary for each sector, although the general decline in both the Primary and Secondary sectors can be accredited to similar causes, It can be argued that the underlying reason for this decrease in both sectors can be attributed to mechanisation, as it is inevitable as businesses seeking profit naturally began to replace many workers for fewer machines as they are generally more reliable and much cheaper to run; thus lowing production costs and increasing the potential for profit in the long run. This period is known as industrialisation, referring to the transition in methods of production, often due to technological innovation or advancements. When the UK Primary sector employment fell extremely rapidly as machines replaced manual labour in most industries; for example combine harvesters and tractors were substituted for farmer workers in Agriculture. The same applies in manufacturing industries when the Secondary sector later experienced employment decline. In Heavy industry such as the creation of metal sheets for raw material resources, large machines replaced many human workers; producing higher output levels in much shorter times. Similarly in Light industries like car manufacturing mechanised assembly line systems began to operate and replace factory workers. Mechanisation soon required far cheaper and more efficient energy resources to sustain levels of output and industries started to use electricity as cheaper and cleaner energy as opposed to coal. This caused a negative multiplier, as machines replaced jobs, electricity replaced coal, thus a fall in demand for coal and more jobs lost in the Primary sector. Agricultural decline has also been largely attributed to the spatial limits of UK farms, as economies of scale apply; the larger the land cultivated the lower the overall costs. Much cheaper crops could soon be imported from countries overseas where labour and land are both cheaper than in the UK. Farmers in the UK are out-bided for land as more profitable industries require it for other uses. The recent disease out-breaks in the UK have also fuelled the employment decline in agriculture. Demand for British meat and crop products has been extremely negatively affected by BSE and Foot and Mouth in recent years, and the low scale UK economy in this sector has never fully recovered. Now in the UK nearly 50% are leaving university with degrees, and this results in a very high demand and high aspirations for graduate level jobs. With more and more people being better educated, and in search of better jobs; higher paid with better prospects, less young people are taking over either family run farms or interested in employment in the manufacturing sector. The average annual wage of a farmer in the UK is i9000 or less, making this an unthinkable occupation for a highly educated skilled workforce. Another larger contributing reason for the decline in manufacturing employment in the UK, especially the rapid decline after 1975 is the government policies implemented during the late 1970s and 1980s. The Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, was s Conservative and passed Acts and introduced policies that effectively privatised much of the public sector. Between 1979-82 over 2 million jobs were lost in manufacturing industries, as wells as further redundancies caused during the last recession. This also affected many Primary industries in the UK, which up until then had been operated under the public sector. Companies like the National Coal board became publically limited companies; UK Coal plc. This was done to replace output targets, set by the government for the provision of required resources to the UK economy, with the profit motive; aiming to make extraction and production, in heavy industries, more efficient via introducing competition as in the public sector they were running at a loss and the government suffered. Also in the private sector the industries would receive the large investment urgently required for full mechanisation to allow more efficient production that the public sector government budget could not provide. Privatisation, however, lead to many coal mines being shut down as firms chose to import coal and other resources from abroad where both labour and land were cheaper, as now in competition costs had to be minimal. In 1984 over 250,000 were employment in coal mines, and now only 10,000 or less are and the activity only accounts for 0. 01% of UK GDP. The heavy industry suffered the most in this case as well as light industries, where assembly lines and factories shut down and production was continued in less developed countries, with less educated workforces, or no minimum wage laws. This cheaper labour drove down costs allowing more to be produced at lower market prices. Examples include Dyson moving production to Malaysia causing 800 jobs to be lost in the UK as production was shut down. Many other firms chose extremely highly populated countries, with a large dispensable workforce like India and China. However this lead to saturation in many markets, as production was so efficient and cheap it was greater than the demand for the consumer goods in the developed countries, this is illustrated by the Kundratieff cycle. The reasons behind the increase in employment in the Tertiary sector are party due to the UK economy's shift to this sector, as Primary and Secondary industries have found cheaper labour and production abroad. Now importing more raw materials and many food products which out compete those produced in the UK for price. Mentioned earlier was the fact that 50% of students in the UK are continuing to University study and emerging with degrees. This creates a large skilled and highly educated workforce, not only allowing for such wide spread service sector growth but almost inducing it as more people are looking for graduate level jobs of a certain calibre with certain salaries. This has also largely resposonsible for the growth of the Quaternary sector; which is commonly considered to included research and development. The UK's highly educated workforce provides innovation and develops industry in other sectors. As views have become more materialist; people want more than they used to, whether that means more expensive cars or more holidays abroad. This increase in consumer spending has allowed firms to be able to invest greater amounts of capital back into their businesses, creating better or more products or allowing them to diversify. Rising interest rates have also encouraged this investment trend, not only with firms though; households are more willing to invest in the stock market, or undergo greater financial risks. This has been responsible for the growth of the UK's now extremely strong and world renowned financial services sector, which contributed i19 billion to the UK's GDP in 2005. Although most salaries in the service sector are low, the financial service sector provides very high potential salaries, as well as annual bonuses and employs over 1. 1 million people. The growth of the internet has allowed many service and good producing firms to close down high street shops and operate entirely from the internet, reducing rent and labour costs enormously and allowing more money for investment and/or profit. Examples include Amazon and Elephant; an insurance company providing an internet based service only. In conclusion I believe that the Primary and Secondary sector's decline in employment was largely down to mechanisation, however in later years other factors had great impacts too; for example policies during Margaret Thatcher's time as Prime Minister in the 1980s causing privatisation. The Tertiary sector employment boom is down to better educations and higher aspirations of the UK workforce, as well as cheaper labour and land abroad. The internet and greater quality of communications has also allowed both the Tertiary and Quaternary sectors to expand as globalisation has occurred. Social wants and desires have also fuelled the service sector growth. Given more time and resources this topic could have been discussed in far greater depth, looking back further in time at employment structures as well as studying and predicting possible trends in the future in the UK economy, as well as looking at global trends. summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8870141273186107219.post-55387708636810134752020-01-11T00:25:00.001-08:002020-01-11T00:25:02.588-08:00Cultural Autobiography EssayCultural Biography: How My Roots Shape My Identity It is often said that we should not let a single feature of ourselves define who we are. For example, a basketball should not only be an athlete, but must also value her roles as a sister, a daughter, a student, and anything else that gives her life meaning. A doctor should not only focus on his identity in the medical field but also his place in his neighborhood, his church, and, of course, his family. Otherwise, he would be considered the workaholic. In many cases, though, it is very easy to do. Peopleââ¬â¢s identities are made up of all the roles they play in their lives. Defining oneself or someone else in only way is not healthy because it does not consider the full complexity the person. Thinking of ourselves in a limited way, such as if I considered myself only a student but did not consider my roles as a friend to others and a family member, could lead to shallow thinking. Thinking of others in such a way can result in stereotyping and even discrimination, such as if someo ne thinks she knows all she that needs to know about someone based on his religious beliefs. Nonetheless, not all aspects of our identities contribute equally to the whole. Certain elements of our environment and background help to shape us fundamentally. They seem to serve as a base for everything else that we would learn, do, and become. I think everyone has one or two areas of that nature. For me, I think that one of the most defining traits about me is the culture I came from, which is Mainland Chinese. Although I keep an open mind and try to learn new ways of looking at the world, the beliefs of my upbringing often are dominant. If you asked me to describe who I am at my core, I would probably say that I am a Chinese woman. Culture, of course, comes from the people around us. As I see it, my family, including a large extended family, has been the most influential community in shaping who I am today, because they passed on their culture to me. Often we do not realize what is our culture until we leave it. I can remember when I first arrived in America and stayed for a short time with a host family. They had a daughter who was 10 years old. She had a little cold at the time. She drank cold orange juice. I was so shocked that her mother allowed her to drink it. In my family, we feel that cold drinks are not good for sick people and that they can hurt the stomach. Many people in China think this way. I could almost hear my own motherââ¬â¢s voice in my head, scolding her disapproving of the cold drink. She and her sisters could never accept this. After hearing this idea for so many years, I, too, was starting to have the same reaction. When people have flu or cold, in China the appropriate drink is thought to be hot water. I suggested to the girlââ¬â¢s mother that she should drink warm water. They both suddenly got a disgust look on their faces. They said orange juice would be better because it has a lot of vitamin C to fight the germs. This was one of my first lessons in culture, both Am erican and my own. For my part, I still do not like to have very cold drinks. However, I do not make any suggestion about what other people should drink. In explaining how my family has influenced me, I should discuss some basic elements about Chinese culture. It is collectivist culture, not individual culture like America. That means that Mainland Chinese society tends to see the group as being more important than the person. The question then is who is the group. Based on stereotypical Western movies or shows, it would be easy to assume that nearly all Chinese act and look alike and that they would see themselves as one group. In fact, this is not true at all. Chinese people think in much smaller terms, most typically, and would see their immediate family, including elders such as parents and grandparents, as their group. In some sense, they would also consider old friends and former and current co-workers to be part of their group. It is not so common in Mainland China to make many new friends as adulthood. People in China depend on these tight networks to help them in hard times, and they have to be ready to repay the favor at som e point in the future. Tight informal networks are very important for getting by in life in China. Chinese culture value family piety. It means we believe in a strong obligation to respect and honor our family members. I would always try myà best to take care of my parents and also older relatives such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles. In a broad sense, family members, because all consider themselves a close group, would do almost anything to help each other. As is said in English, they would take the shirt from his or her own back to give to the other person. This kind of thinking is based on Confucianism, where taking care of the family is considered to be the highest value. Unfortunately, a related matter is that sometimes in Mainland China, people are not as quick to get involved when a stranger needs help, and some people without integrity are quick to take advantage of strangers and cheat them. We also do not have as much public volunteer and charity culture, as many people would feel guilty if they spend their money on people who are outside their own family. The concept of taking care of the family is so important to culture that it is sometimes humorous to other people from other countries. I once was at dinner in a group that included both American and international students. Some people were talking about what they would do if they won the lottery. A Chinese boy said he guessed that if he won, he would soon get married, and have a child. His friend, another boy from China, commented that the money would not only last for the lifetime for him and his son, but also for generations into the future. The American boys at the table laughed at the Chinese boysââ¬â¢ ideas. They thought they should use the money for their own fun, and would not like to get married. However, the Chinese students were looking from Chinese point of view, where not only the individual but the entire family name and bloodline is considered. They see a responsibility to their ancestors and to future bloodline that they should have a child. Personally, I like the viewpoint of thinking about multiple generations and not only focusing on the present. I have always been raised by my family to hold this point of view. Without a network of family and close friends, it is hard to survive in China, especially during hard times several decades ago. It is not so easy to get credit, so people rely on their networks to help them make a down payment for a house. Many people lack health insurance, and so if they needed and expensive surgery, they could perhaps ask their closest family and associates for help with money. Furthermore, in hospital, it is not like in America where nurses feed and bathe theà patients. In China, patientsââ¬â¢ family members must help with those chores, and nurses usually would not help. As a result of these factors, Chinese people spend a lot of time cultivating their networks by choosing the right gifts on holidays, offering a helping hand when possible, and asking for help when needed. It is fair t o say that in China, if you do not have close connections in your life, including family members, friends, coworkers, then it is almost like you do not exist, according to societyââ¬â¢s point of view. On the other hand, if you do have a family, then you feel much more secure and happy. You also get a large amount of your own identity from the group rather from your individual situation. It is important to behave well in society and try to be successful not only for your own sake, but also in order to create a good name for your family. Therefore I think that sometimes even if I do not feel like studying sometimes, I push myself to do so anyway, because if I came to America and did not perfect well in university, then I would create a bad impression on my family, including parents and extended relatives, as well. In fact, Chinese people from Mainland often do not like to spend time alone or to be in secluded places. We tend to like crowds and a lot of excitement and perceive them as safer because it would be harder for criminals to get away with serious crime amid a crowd. I felt strongly this way when I first arrived in America, but now I am getting used to peace and quiet. I have heard that Americans often like to go camping or fishing in order to get away from other people. This concept is a little different from China. I remember showing my mother a picture of our campus and she wanted to know why it looked so lonely. Later I took a photo when more students were out walking, and she seemed to feel much more comforted that I was in a safe place. On the other hand, some Americans have told me they think crowds are more dangerous, because it is easier for thieves to pick pockets or commit other crimes. My immediate and extended family has always been a source of much emotional support for me. My mother has several siblings and they each have children, so I have many aunts, uncles, and cousins. They always ask what I am doing in my life and they give me suggestions. They are not afraid to criticize meà if they feel it is warranted, such as for eating too much junk foods or not studying hard enough. In Chinese culture, these comments would never be taken as offense but instead in a spirit of caring. I always spend much time finding appropriate Chinese New Year gifts for my aunts and uncles as a show of respect. Sometimes the gifts could be as simple as fruit baskets, chocolates, or cake. I just want to show them that I am thinking of them. My family, including parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, serves as my home base on life. I have always felt that no matter what happened, there is a safe haven with many people who always cared about me. Much of Chinese family culture is expressed over food. If I go to visit one of my aunts and she knew I am coming, then it is sure that she will prepare my favorite noodle dish. Caring is often expressed with food. From my mother and father and several of their siblings and my grandparents, I learned to cook many dishes at a young. I learned mostly at quite a young age. In this way, too, my family has been the biggest influence on my life, as now I cook almost every day and can take care of myself. I do not need to depend on others to cook and I do not have to go to restaurants except for fun. Over meals, much culture gets passed to children as adults talk about what is going on in their lives and how they handle it. They often give advice to children, but it seems to be that there is not as much two-way communications culture as in America and other Western countries. In other words, adults would not often ask children what they think about things. I am sure that I am not the only person who feels that family has been the largest influence in life, and certainly not the only Chinese person with this idea. In fact, when we are away from our families, we try to recreate the experience in some ways. In UC, there are many Chinese students all in the same situation, living away from their home country. We have formed friend groups and often cook together, go to restaurants, or go to other activities. At times, groups of students even go on vacation to New York or Chicago or other locations. As it is in China, most social activities for us here have revolved around eating food. We often chat, give each other advice, and try to help each other to study and make good grades. As vitamin and other health supplements are very popular, we often discuss productsà that we have tried or plan to try. Everyone has similar goals and we almost do not even need to say them out loud, because they are widely known. We all come from similar kinds o f families, usually involved in business. Everyone wants to make good grades, be successful, and make their parents happy. My friends are a very important group to me here, but in my overall life, I guess they are not nearly as influential to me as my relatives are. Chinese families were large for many years, sometimes with seven to 10 children. I know that my great grandmother came from a very large family. However, because of overpopulation, China has implemented the one-child policy. Although there are exceptions, the general rule is that only one child is allowed per couple. Now China is becoming a land of spoiled only-children. I often wonder what will happen to Chinaââ¬â¢s family culture and if culture and knowledge will be passed down as efficiently. Many people grow up without uncles, aunts, cousins or, of course, siblings. This seems to be a significant social issue for a country whose character is still collectivist. Perhaps China will make the shift rather quickly to a culture of individualism. Or perhaps they will express collectivism in some other different formats, such as neighborhood groups and volunteer societies. At any rate, eventually rising population of people without close relatives to watch after them as they age will mean a need for more caregiving and health care professionals. There are many aspects that define my life, including my status as a student, family member, and friend. While these are important roles, they do not capture everything about who I am. One element that runs deeper than those items is my culture, most of which I received from relatives. I grew up in China until coming to school at UC. My thinking has certainly been influenced by the time I have spent living abroad, but it nonetheless does continue to be Chinese at the heart. In a Chinese family, your family is almost literally all that you have to depend on in many cases. I am quite thankful that I have a wonderful family. summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8870141273186107219.post-70431161113430306872020-01-02T20:46:00.001-08:002020-01-02T20:46:03.480-08:00Top 6 Bryan Ferry Solo Songs of the 80s summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8870141273186107219.post-48378621565512007112019-12-25T17:13:00.001-08:002019-12-25T17:13:03.757-08:00Is Anxiety A Normal Human Emotion That Every Single Person... What is Anxiety Is anxiety a normal human emotion that every single person experiences? Before I was asked to write this paper, I didnââ¬â¢t think ever had experienced anxiety. Since I have done a little research, I have noticed that I have personally familiarities of several symptoms of a couple different types of anxiety. Anxeity almost feels like a natural instinct from some of the unknown, or uncomfortable stuff we experience in life. Diet and exercise can make a huge difference with all types of anxeity. The more we learn to live fully and love ourselves, the less we will be anxious. Anxeity comes in many forms and has various outcomes; I have come to realize anxiety can vary in all types of people and they can have more than one type at a time. There are six main types of anxiety. Generalized Anxiety Generalized anxeity disorder is characterized by persistent, excessive, and unrealistic worry about everyday things. (GAD) When my mind races with all the stressful worries of the day and keeps replaying in my head, I get anxiety. I donââ¬â¢t know what to do with myself in that moment. I get irritable with my loved ones and sleep a lot more than normal. As soon as I can reach out to someone or sleep on it; my mind starts to settle. Other treatments I have discovered are meditation or a swift walk. Going through history class, and growing up, I had heard many stories of Hong Kong, China, Britain, and Japan, but I never realized how intertwined they truly were and how their stories were really told. John Carroll did a remarkable job setting the scene for what Hong Kong was, where they had been, and how they made it through all of it and came out with their own identity. Hong Kong is a bustling cosmopolitan city with many distinct features that separate it from a traditional Chinese territory. Hong Kong or the Fragrant Harbor is on the southernmost coast, situated in between the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In reality, the picture in my head could not have been more wrong. Just after arrival on January 2, 2016, we got to really experience the gigantic proportion of the Hong Kong airport as compared to our little hub in Tulsa. After our time in the airport, we finally got on our journey to Kowloon Peninsula to our hotel. The MTR ride was very enlightening, and I remember feeling like a child in awe and merriment at all the fantastic sites that were before my eyes. I took a deep breath and promised myself that regardless of what happened and no matter what I would not ruin my trip with any negative thoughts. Professor Weaver reinforced this when he said, ââ¬Å"you do not have to like it, but I encourage you to try it, and no whiningâ⬠. I was going to try and replay everything that I had read and researched prior to the trip and see if I could remember the significance of the sites. In scientific language, culture is not a function of race (Benedict). The sad fact is that many races are discriminated against. Discrimination is defined as the act of perceiving and making evident the distinctions between two different groups of people. There have been many groups that have been very discriminating, but the one that sticks out like a diamond in coal is the Ku Klux Klan. The original Ku Klux Klan was formed, in April 1866, as a social organization for ex-confederates in Pulaski, Tennessee. This was during the time after the civil war, known as the Reconstruction period (Benets). The name Ku Klux Klan came from the Greek word kuklos, meaning band or circle (Benets). The Ku Klux Klan spread very rapidly through the south and soon got the nickname of the Invisible Empire (Ingalls). The Ku Klux Klan has been referred to by many different terms such as The Klan or KKK. In 1867, Nathaniel Bedford Forrest, an ex-confederate cavalry leader, and many other ex-confederates held a meeting and converted the social group to a group that opposed the Republican State government (Trelease). Nathaniel Bedford and many common group members, Klansmen, formed this group for three reasons. They wanted to keep white supremacy evident, make sure the black community didnt revolt, and make sure the black community stayed in their place (Trelease). The Klansmen were from ever y economic social class, but the leaders would usually be from the elite Lepech 2professional class (Trelease). The Klan was and still is present in both America and Canada (Ingalls). The hierarchy of the KKK was set in the April 1867 meeting (Columbia). At this meeting, Nathaniel Bedford Forrest was made the Grand Wizard, which meant he was the leader of all of the clans (Columbia). A step lower than the Grand Wizard was the Grand Dragon (Columbia). A Grand Dragon and his Realm controlled each state (Columbia). The Realms were made up of eight Hydras, who acted as a staff to the Grand Dragon (Columbia). Below the Grand Dragon were the Grand Titans with their six Furies that controlled each county (Columbia). These rankings classified the duties of each one of the members. The Ku Klux Klan used fear as a major proponent in their tactics to oppress the black community. Klansmen would disguise themselves in robes, hold silent parades, make midnight rides on horses, and speak with mysterious language and commands (Columbia). The KKK Dressed in flowing sheets, their faces covered with white masks, and with skulls at their saddle horns, posed as spirits of the confederate dead returned from the battlefields (Columbia). To accelerate the fear in the eyes of the common people The Klan would hold lynchings and whippings (Columbia). The widespread fear allowed the KKK to gain political power even though they were veering away from their main idea of restricting the south from reconstruction. By doing many of these activities the KKK very effectively managed to keep blacks away from the voting booths. Many Klansmen were elected into office because the black community could not vote. Even though the white supremacists were in office,Lepech 3they did not do as much as they would have hoped. Officials did not accomplish the idea of minimizing black power and increasing white supremacy. The Ku Klux Klan power did diminish in 1870 and 1871, when congress passed the Force Bill (Columbia). This bill stated that one could not restrict anothers right to vote, which the KKK was doing. Another attempt to try to stop the KKK was the KKK acts of 1870 and 1871. After the KKK was proven to be violent, these laws that were formally passed disbanding the KKK in 1871 (Benets). Even though these bills and acts were passed, the KKK still survived. The Clansman, written by Thomas Dixon in 1905, and the motion picture Birth of a Nation, by D.W. Grifith in 1915, stimulated the birth of the second Ku Klux Klan (Trelease). The second KKK was founded by an ex-minister, William J. Simmons, who was an excellent promoter of group activity (Columbia). There were many similarities of this new movement to the original. The new KKK movement added anti-nativism, anti-Catholicism, and anti-Semitic views to the black hatred of the first group and also attacked the issues of birth control, Darwinis m, pacifism, and the repeal of prohibition (Benets; Columbia). It also drew members from all social classes but mainly the lower middle class (Trelease). Another common tribute between the original and second KKK was that they both spread very rapidly (Columbia). .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 , .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .postImageUrl , .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 , .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53:hover , .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53:visited , .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53:active { border:0!important; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53:active , .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53 .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub903eb274f62536674efd6d21374ef53:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Sound In Poetry EssayEven though the original Klan had similarities with the second, they also had some differences. The second KKK not only feared blacks but also feared the many immigrants entering the U.S. (Trelease). The Catholics and Jews that were rising in their economic social order made the KKK feel threatened and caused them to be very Lepech 4weary of the newcomers social position (Trelease). The second KKK burned crosses, which was unlike the original (Trelease). The burnt crosses were used to frighten as many people as possible even though the Ku Klux Klan believed they were very religious. This new Klan was mostly not violent, unlike The Klan before (Trelease ). To make their mark on society, the KKK would parade in silent marches and wear KKK paraphernalia (Trelease). These events that were held more peacefully did more damage to the opposition than any other tactic the KKK used. The KKKs main objective was not for political control, but this idea came along because it was a peaceful and legal way to gain control. Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Oregon, and Maine all elected KKK members as state officials or congressmen (Columbia). The elected officials places were won many times because blacks were not allowed to vote (Columbia). These peaceful means of objection to the minorities worked well because this allowed them to attempt to achieve their goals legally. Over time, the KKK declined due to several reasons. Davis C. Stephen was convicted of the murder of a black man that created a declination of the KKK in the 1920s (Columbia). This event caused a decline in membership from 5 million to 30,000 by 1930 (Columbia). In 1923, there were less than half as many lynchings as in 1922. The comparison was from 61 lynchings in 1922 to 26 in 1923. Of the 26 victims in 1923, one was a colored women and two white men the other 23 victims were black males (KKK). Other reasons that the KKK declined in this time period was that the media looked down upon their events, and the interest of the Klan members themselves diminished (Benets). State laws also forbid the organization from being a secret society Lepech 5(Columbia). These state laws made it illegal to gather together secretly and to perform many of their actions. Even though this decline lowered the numbers, the leaders still made a big profit from the sale of KKK paraphernalia (Columbia). There was a another final attempt to reorganize the KKK by Dr. Samuel Green, but it failed (Columbia). The major stimulus of this new KKK movement was due to the many civil rights activities during the 1960s (Ingalls). Most of the members in the third KKK were white people from a very low social economic class (Benets). Even though this attempt failed, the KKK still continues. This modern Klan is very small and does not have many members (Trelease). Other parties that are similar to the KKK in todays life are the National States Rights Party, The Aryan Nations, and the Skinheads (Trelease). Although crimes and complications with the KKK are not common, some recent examples have occurred. One example occurred in 1991 when a black man was set on fire after being soaked in gasoline. This crime occurred in Hillsborough County, Florida (Hatred 22). Another incident involving the Ku Klux Klan happened in Jasper, Texas where many Ku Klux Klan members, wearing white robes and hoods, waved confederate flags. This situation was very controversial because Jasper, Texas was the town where a black man was dragged to his death behind a pickup truck by three white men. Klan leader Rick Anderson commented that, Jasper is part of the invisible empire. Make no mistake, this is Klan country, when he paraded in Jasper. Another Klansmen stated that the KKK was doing Jasper a favor by practicing freedom of speech (Blacks). This incident in Jasper shows how the Ku Klux Klan followed up on a murder and made more damage by parading around the town. .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a , .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .postImageUrl , .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a , .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a:hover , .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a:visited , .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a:active { border:0!important; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a:active , .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2a5125418c96193a91178b329f1c378a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Diabetes EssayLepech 6The Ku Klux Klan, above any other group, is a very discriminating group. The protagonist of a tragedy, known as the Tragic Hero is supposed to have certain characteristics which cause the audience to sympathise with them and get emotionally involved with the plot. The two main characters, Medea and Jason, each have certain qualities of the Tragic Hero, but neither has them all. This makes them more like the common man that is neither completely ood nor evil, but is caught in the middle and forced to make difficult decisions. Euripides Medea is a play based on the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. The play was originally performed around 431 BC and was written as a part of the festival of Dionysius. In the play, Euripides deviated from the classic tragedy to show the psychological workings of a woman, Medea. We will write a custom essay sample on Jason and Medea Ponders or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Medea was a well known fgure to the audience of Greece at this time. Until this play was written, she was never viewed in a monstrous light. In the play Medea, Euripides has taken the well known myth about Medea, but changed the ending and shown the story from her perspective. In the original story, it is the people of Corinth that kill her children; however, in the play, Euripides has made her kill her own children. The protagonist of a typical Greek tragedy generally has the following attributes; hubris , hamartia , anagnorisis , nobility, and a tragic demise caused by their own mistake or a punishment sent by the gods. Both Jason and Medea come from noble backgrounds as according to myth, Medea is a princess of Colchis, and Jason is the rightful heir to the throne of lolcus. Medea helped him retrieve the Golden Fleece, but we see that it is his hamartia that he does not value everything she does to help him and out of greed for the throne of Corinth he has made the royal alliance in which [he] now live[s] (19) Yet, it is hard to see him as the hero as Medea point out his cowardice, If you were not a coward, you would not have married behind my back, but discussed it with me first. (19) Medeas hamartia appears to be her intense passion for Jason, which led her to leave everything for his sake, and then to hate him so bitterly and pursue her unimaginable plans for revenge. She helped him in every way possible in his quest for the Golden Fleece, Her heart on fire with passionate love for Jason But now theres hatred everywhere. Love is diseased. (1) However, in a tragedy, the hero is supposed to make a single mistake which ultimately leads to their downfall. In this case, Medea is not a heroic character as she is a sorceress, murders her brother, and her own children. The hamartia is intended to bring down a character of high morality, but Medea can be viewed as a wholly evil character who is not guided by any moral principles. She is also manipulative and deceptive in the way that she reats the men around her, Creon, Aegeus, and Jason, while involving them in her plan for revenge. Euripides has shown this aspect of her personality through lines such as Do you think that I would have fawned on that man unless I had some end to gain or profit in it? (12) and by a trick I may kill the kings daughter (25) Medea and Jason botn partially snow anagnorisis: Medeas moment ot anagnorisis occur in the beginning of the play when she realizes that it was a mistake to have killed her own brother for Jasons sake. She recognises that she is left with nowhere to go Oh my father! Oh my country! In what dishonour I left you, killing my own brother for it. (6) However, she does not recognise the misery she has brought upon herself by killing her children, nor does she see the wrong in murdering innocent people. At the end of the play, Jason realises that Medea is evil, Now I see it plain you, an evil thing (43) However, at no point in the play does he accept that he is also at fault for the childrens death by betraying her. The aspect of the tragic hero that isnt met at all by either character is a tragic demise. In the end, neither of them dies. Medea not nly lives, but she escapes to Athens in a chariot drawn by dragons (43) Euripides has used this ending of the play to show a world where evil can escape without punishment while the innocent suffer. This is another place where his play is unlike a typical Greek drama, as usually someone such as the Gods or the Furies intervene for punishment. In this case, it is a God who helps her escape, mfou will never touch me with your hand, such a chariot has Helius, my fathers father, given me to defend me from my enemies. (43) Jason is shown to be selfish and uncaring as in the beginning, hile he is well off, he is willing to put up with it that his children should suffer so (3) and to let them live in exile. We see his hypocrisy when they are dead and he calls out Oh, children I loved! (46) Medea points this out Now you would speak to them, now you would kiss them. Then you rejected them (46) This makes it easier to sympathise with Medea as she is consistent throughout and only acts this way because she was deeply hurt. As she says, Is love so small a pain, do you think, for a woman? (44) She is not the soulless murderer that Jason makes her out to be and t oints in the play she does show some reluctance towards killing her children, and her love for them Why should I hurt their father with the pain they feel, and suffer twice as much of pain myself? No, no, I will not do it. I renounce my plans. (34) However, her hubris comes in the way as she decides Do I want to let go my enemies unhurt and be laughed at for it? I must face this thing. One of her motivations for killing her children is also that their death is inevitable; she reveals this when she says This shall never be, that I should suffer my children to be the prey of my nemies insolence. (34) She also shows that she loves them when she says Force every way will have it they must die, and since this must be so, then I their mother, shall kill them This one short day be forgetful of your children, afterward weep; for even though you will kill them, they were very dear Oh, I am an unhappy woman! (40) This dialogue makes her seem more humane, and arouses pity in the audience as they see her dilemma, and struggle to follow through with her task. Although the audience does sympathise with her, at the end of the day to murder nes children is an unforgivable act which is why the audience still views her as a monster. The tragic hero should ideally be someone who suffers because of a mistake. Initially, she suffers due to Jason, but in her act of killing her children, she is bringing suffering upon herself as a part of a calculated plan for revenge. Jason on the other hand does suffer because of his hamartia. He betrays Medea, and in order to take revenge on him, she kills his children and bride, and leaves without the political power he had hoped to achieve in marrying Glauce. In his final outcry, O God, do you near it, this persecution, these my sutterings trom this natetul woman, this monster, murderess of children? (46) The audience feels some sympathy for him, as he has nothing left, but still looks at him as the one at fault for treating Medea so badly. The play Medea does not have a tragic hero, as neither of the characters fits the mould, however if anyone is to be viewed as the tragic hero, it would be Medea as she is the main character and both the audience and the chorus sympathise more with her suffering. Throughout the course of the book, many lessons are learned that give the reader advice so he/she can better survive in the real world. The literal Treasure Island itself represents the world in which we live, a world with many hazards and scattered rewards to be found. The bookà s most important lesson to be learned though, is that a solid command of the language and knowing when to use it can make life much easier for a person. Although this story takes place centuries before our time now, this useful lesson found in it can still be applied to our lives today. This story is so realistic in its context of the time and its superb character dialogues, that it is very easy for the reader to be transported right in the middle of that age, and right in the company of sea-faring pirates. The authorà s vivid descriptions of Jim, the main character and narrator, the many Pirates and other characters he comes across during his adventures are painstakingly detailed. You can see young Jim's eager and excited face when he finds out he is going on a treasure hunt. You can also easily picture the rips and bloodstained rags of the pirates, and smell the foul alcohol on their breaths. The description of the island itself is extremely detailed also, and it seems like the author was looking straight off a geographical map when he wrote the in-depth account of it. However deep these descriptions of setting and character pull you into the plot, the dialogue the author places in the story is what makes the story more impressive and impossible to escape. It is so captivating and original to us because we hardly ever hear it, and the phrases are very creative. An example is this quote from Long John Silver: " But for two year before that, shiver my timbers! the man was starving. He begged, and he stole, and he ... summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8870141273186107219.post-81059431667728420702019-11-23T04:25:00.001-08:002019-11-23T04:25:03.462-08:00The English Lexicon Will Always Be Back-FormatedThe English Lexicon Will Always Be Back-Formated The English Lexicon Will Always Be Back-Formated The English Lexicon Will Always Be Back-Formated By Mark Nichol Back-formation, the development of a new form of a word by subtracting an element from an existing word, often results in additions to our word-hoard that people deem grotesque, but many words we consider members in good standing of the English language- usually verbs- have been created this way. Derided terms of recent vintage frequently originate in business-speak: Conversate is inexplicably more complicated than the verb it supplants (converse); incentivize takes too long to speak or write, perhaps, so now we have incent; liaise awkwardly abridges the phrase ââ¬Å"form a liaisonâ⬠; protà ©gà © has inexplicably surrendered to mentee as the logical counterpart of mentor; and notate is derived from notation, because note somehow does not suffice. However, common- and quite acceptable- noun-to-verb back-formations starting with nearly every letter of the alphabet abound, including automate (automation), babysit (babysitter), curate (curator), diagnose (diagnosis), evaluate (evaluation), flouresce (fluorescence), gamble (gambler), hustle (hustler), injure (injury), jell (jelly), kidnap (kidnapper), legislate (legislator), manipulate (manipulation), nitpick (nit-picking), orientate (orientation), peddle (peddler), reminisce (reminiscence), swindle (swindler), televise (television), upholster (upholstery), and vaccinate (vaccination). Some less obviously produced yet patently useful back-formations include the verbs derived from nouns beg (beggar) and moonlight (from moonlighter, the slang term for one who works a second job). Back-formation of nouns from adjectives has produced diplomat (diplomatic), greed (greedy), haze (hazy), peeve (peevish), and suburb (suburban), while adjectival back-formations from nouns include complicit (complicity), decadent (decadence), and surreal (surrealism). Two noun-to-noun developments denoting individual specimens based on words for collective concepts are ideologue (ideology) and statistic (statistics); yet another, stave, is a redundant back-formation of staves, the plural of staff in the sense of ââ¬Å"a long stick or strip of wood.â⬠Unit, meanwhile, derives from unity. Cherry, pea, and tamale are back-formations based on linguistic ignorance of terms borrowed from another language or descended from a previous version of one (from, respectively, the French word cherise, the Middle English term pease, and tamales, the Spanish plural of tamal). Similar back-formations considered nonstandard (now and, one can hope, forever) include bicep (and tricep) and kudo, based on the erroneous assumption that the words biceps (and triceps) and kudos (the former from Latin and the latter from Greek) are plural. Back-formations fill a need- whether valid or merely perceived as valid- and though some of them may, thankfully, wither from neglect, others will acquire legitimacy over time, while still others will proliferate (that word is itself a back-formation) anew. But this was before civilization knew about this thing called criminal justice system within a democratic government. Today, we have laws that define crimes and their penalties as well as the procedure for ascertaining the guilt or innocence of the accused. No less than the Fifth Amendment guarantees that, ââ¬Å"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand juryâ⬠¦nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. In this view, I submit that capital punishment should be abolished. Death as a penalty for a crime has no place in a country that prides itself as the bastion of democracy and the grand protector of life and liberty throughout the world. Killing a person is not just a crime. It is wrong. It does not matter if the killer is a deranged individual or a government intoxicated in its immense power to take the life of another person. Capital punis hment is killing. summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8870141273186107219.post-21444510384544271342019-11-19T18:02:00.001-08:002019-11-19T18:02:03.954-08:00Applying the Laws of Sines and Cosines Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsApplying the Laws of Sines and Cosines - Essay Example For both solutions of the ambiguous case the third angle is found and the rest sides are calculated (Aufmann and Nation, 2014). SSS and SAS cases are solved applying the law of cosines. According to the law of cosines, the square of any side of the triangle is equal to the sum of squares of the rest sides subtracting double product of these sides and a cosine of the angle between these sides (Aufmann and Nation, 2014). For instance, For SSS case, the cosine of each angle can be found from the equation, and the corresponding angles can be calculated. For the SAS case the unknown side is found from the equation initially. Then, the rest angles are found using the procedure for SSS case (Aufmann and Nation, 2014). Thus, the general guidelines for any triangle are to define the problem or the case (SSS, SSA) encountered. For the ambiguous case, the number of possible triangles has to be found. Afterward, the solution for the triangle can be found using the procedures described summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8870141273186107219.post-48335192617983558472019-11-17T06:34:00.001-08:002019-11-17T06:34:07.366-08:00Comparing and contrasting Silver Blaze and Finger Man Essay Example for Free Comparing and contrasting Silver Blaze and Finger Man Essay When one thinks of detective fiction stories images of crime, murder, hero detective and villains enter a persons mind. These images have been constantly changing over years, but they are not very different from when detective stories first began in 1828. The birth of detective stories came about in 1828 with a novel called Memoires supposedly written by Vidocq a chief of Frances detective force known as Surete. In 1841 a number of short stories were composed and collected to form The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allen Poe but it was in 1892 when detective stories finally emerged and become known by the people. It was in 1892 when The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was published in the Strand magazine that detective fiction had become a great success. The years of Sherlock Holmes stories are considered as the Golden Age of detective fiction, after this authors began to take different approaches towards detective fiction writing, the writing was most notoriously named Hard Boiled detective fiction. Both types of approaches varied in different ways with each other, the Golden Age era consisted of stories with closed settings and focused its characters in the middle and upper classes. In the Hard Boiled era the plot would be mentally just as challenging as a story from the Golden Age era, but would unfold and lead to violent twists and turns. In Hard-boiled stories the detective solves the mystery by creating more trouble and being tough but does not return society to order or vindicate the power of reason. It was this new Hard Boiled setting that Raymond Chandler set his stories, and created his hard boiled detective Philip Marlow. Philip Marlow was first introduced in 1921 through a magazine called The Black Mask, which contained his short stories.à Both Silver Blaze and Finger Man are fictional Detective stories, but differ in many different ways from language and dialogue to cultural changes shown between both stories. This is because the stories were written at two different times, Silver Blaze is a pre 20th century piece of text where as Finger Man was created within the 20th century. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle a British author created Silver Blaze which featured one of the most renowned detective characters, Sherlock Holmes. His fictional character became so famous and loved by the public they actually embraced his identity and grew to believe that Sherlock Holmes was a real person and lived at 221b Baker Street. Finger Man was created by an American author called Raymond Chandler and starred a private detective by the name of Philip Marlowe. This fictional character appealed to a wide audience and was in most of Raymond Chandlers stories, eventually Hollywood used these stories and the character Philip Marlowe to create motion pictures.à In Silver Blaze Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr Watson travel to Devon to uncover the kidnapping of a prize-winning horse. In this detective novel any clue will help towards the case and anybody having some relevance with the horse will be a suspect. In Silver Blaze the plot mainly revolves around a few individuals such as. Whereas in finger man the story includes many characters who each play some small yet important part within the story. In Finger Man we see a tale of false framing on the main character Philip Marlowe who is set up by gangsters. It starts happening when he takes a job for a friend, but his friend dies and Marlowe becomes the prime suspect. When I read both stories there were many differences in character between Sherlock Holmes and Philip Marlowe. Sherlock Holmes is a more thoughtful and clue based detective where as Philip Marlowe relies on tip-offs and violence to resolve a situation. Sherlock Holmes is a methodical detective and relies in his wits to solve a case whereas PM uses his instincts. Within Silver Blaze Sherlock Holmes has a partner called Watson, the story itself is narrated by Watson and told through his view. PM is a one-man army and doesnt depend on anybody for assistance unless in dire circumstances.à The change in text and dialogue is clearly shown once reading both stories. Pre 20th century text is very descriptive which is used as a feature of Holmes personality. In Finger Man the dialogue is very abrupt and direct, which also constructs an image of the stories setting and the characters persona. summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8870141273186107219.post-91907760716972207122019-11-14T19:06:00.001-08:002019-11-14T19:06:04.311-08:00The Hypocrisy of Humanity Depicted in Harper Leeââ¬â¢s To Kill a MockingbirHarper Leeââ¬â¢s To Kill a Mockingbird, has many stories from Scoutsââ¬â¢ little town in Alabama that teaches the reader the good and bad sides of the human being. When all these come together, the result is this fantastic novel. One of the stories that stand out is the one when Mrs. Gates and Cecil Jacobs have a conversation in the classroom. They talk about Adolph Hitler and the malicious things he did to the Jewish people. Mrs. Gates tries to tell her students that what he did was wrong in a very firm tone of voice. At this point in the story, the reader feels anger for everything the Nazis did. However, the main point of this passage is to make the reader realize how two-faced Mrs. Gates is. In this novel, Harper Lee implies that humanity should be less hypocritical. When Cecil Jacobs makes his presentation about Adolph Hitler, Mrs. Gates comments about it. She teaches the children in her classroom that what this man did was very wrong since he killed many Jews just because he did not like them. Nevertheless, the reader finds this very paradoxical for the reason that she does not have respect for black-colored-people. Mrs. Gates does not seem to understand the bad example that she is providing to the children she is teaching to. Her hypocrisy does not help to fulfill her role as teacher: to teach and provide the skills and principles children will have to use later in life. The author of this novel has given the reader this story to symbolize the hypocrisy that one finds in todayââ¬â¢s society, to show that sometimes and most of the time, the human beings talk a lot but do not look at their own actions or execute what they are teaching. Harper Leeââ¬â¢s To Kill a Mockingbird shows so many characteristics of todayââ¬â¢s society. Among thes... ...ould be more honest and less hypocritical. An individual who is a great example of this is Al Gore, the Oscar-Winner for his documentary ââ¬Å"An Inconvenient Truthâ⬠. He tells audiences the way they should live and how they should manage their life-styles to help save the environment mean while he is riding in style and waists twelve times more electric energy compared to an average family in a year. Harper Lee has used the narrative point of view, characterization and irony to develop a more dramatic effect of hypocrisy between Mrs. Gates and black-colored-people. It is very unfortunate that there are people like Mrs. Gates and Mr. Al Gore in todayââ¬â¢s world. For this reason, every individual should strive to be better as a person to make their community a better place to live in and to provide an appropriate example to those who will live in it in the next generations. summerfosthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16618596216961600082noreply@blogger.com0
